How did ou have your lights wired? If you had them coming right off the battery then yeah, it'll kill the battery. Anyway, here's how I've push started my bike. this is from experience.
1: Put it in first gear.
2: Squeeze the clutch.
3: Start pushing....this is alot easier if you have someone helping you push.
4: When you're finally moving at a decent pace, pop the clutch and give it gas.
make sure that the ignition is on.
